Our community build project has been coming together piece by piece, and it’s thrilling to see real, tangible progress as we prefabricate various structural elements like columns and rafters. This hands-on experience has been packed with challenges, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding to learn so many new skills along the way.
One of the things I’ve enjoyed most is the opportunity to jump into every aspect of the project. From planning and design to working with wood for some of the foundational pieces, it’s been fascinating to see how each element fits into the bigger picture. I’ve developed an appreciation for the precision and craftsmanship that woodworking requires—it’s detail-oriented, demanding a steady hand and careful measurements. It’s the sort of work that can only be mastered with time, but every project offers a chance to improve.
But out of everything I’ve tackled, it’s the metalwork that has truly energized me. Working with a small, dedicated team, we’ve been cutting, grinding, and welding steel pieces that will serve as critical connectors in our rafter system. Each step has its own challenges: cutting and grinding steel demands careful focus, while welding requires steady hands, patience, and a good eye for alignment. We started with practice lines, welding small pieces to get comfortable with the equipment and the techniques. Moving up from practice work to tackling actual project components felt like a major milestone, and it’s been inspiring to see our confidence grow along with our skill.
Of course, there’s still plenty of trial and error in this process. Mistakes happen—sometimes a weld doesn’t quite hold, or a piece doesn’t align as expected. But each mistake teaches us something new and brings us a step closer to mastering this craft. Looking at my first weld compared to my latest, I can see how far I’ve come. It’s gratifying to watch my skills progress and know that, with each connection we create, we’re building something both durable and meaningful.
Now that everything’s cut, ground, and welded, we’re getting ready to treat the metal so it’s ready for the long haul. This final step will ensure that these pieces last well beyond us and continue to support the structure for generations. Treating the metal adds another layer of endurance, and it’s a reminder that what we’re building here isn’t just a structure; it’s a lasting contribution to our community.
Projects like these are such a testament to the power of collaboration and learning, and I’m grateful to be part of a team that’s as passionate and committed as ours. Every cut, grind, and weld marks progress—not just in the physical structure, but in our collective skill, resilience, and connection to each other. As we move closer to completion, I’m excited to see this project come to life and feel proud of the role we all played in bringing it together.
