Enjoying the Charleston Sun

The studio prioritized time outdoors this weekend… at the worksite! Working Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, our team spent many hours on site this weekend building the Old Towne Creek Donor Wall. On Sunday, some students went back to the site to finish the rafters and purlins while three of us went to the studio to work on the material count for the Plymouth Park pavilion. As one project wraps up, we will dive head first into the next!

Getting to build the wall this weekend was an incredible learning opportunity. We experienced some on-site issues and learned how to adjust and fix them to make things work in real time. We learned how to work together and look out for each other on-site. We all got to see how things actually come together to make a wall, and all of the little logistics and measurements that have to line up for it to work. While a long studio day is typical in any architecture studio, this one was much different than normal and taught us in a new way. We may have gotten eaten alive by bugs and a little sunburnt, but we also got to see a design come to life. We all commented on aspects of this wall that we liked and didn’t think would fit our site, so now we can understand our pavilion design on a deeper level and make adjustments to some of the details as needed.

The next steps for our team are finishing roofing for Old Towne Creek, and working through the final stages of construction documents, as well as shop drawings, for Plymouth Park. After that, it will be back to the shop for fabrication. With only a handful of weeks left in the semester, things are picking up in studio as well as the rest of our classes, making it an exciting time of the semester.
