Steel & Stone

This week marked a significant milestone in our community build project: we completed the foundation work! This step is essential in any construction project, setting the groundwork—quite literally—for everything that will be built on top. Here’s a look at the process we followed and what it took to bring this foundation to life.

1. Excavation and Preparation

We started by digging out the foundation to the planned dimensions. This excavation was crucial not only to create a stable base but also to ensure the structure would be aligned correctly and capable of withstanding the weight and elements it will face over time. Once the site was dug out, we tamped the ground to ensure it was firm and ready to support the foundation. Tamping compacts the soil, making it denser and better able to bear weight.

2. Placing the Rebar

With the ground ready, we laid out the rebar to reinforce the foundation. Rebar, or reinforcing steel, adds crucial strength and durability, helping the foundation withstand tension that could cause cracks over time. The rebar grid was carefully placed, ensuring that it aligned with our plans and met building codes. This step might look simple, but it takes precision—ensuring the rebar doesn’t shift when the concrete is poured is key to creating a strong, stable base.

3. Pouring the Concrete

The final step of this phase was the concrete pour, the moment we’d been working toward. As we filled the foundation mold, we made sure the concrete settled evenly around the rebar and tamped it as we went to eliminate any air pockets. Once the concrete was poured and leveled, it was time to wait for it to cure.
