Today was a busy day in the shop.
As a recap, half of the students in the ITC class are working on a model staircase project which is meant to be a lesson on bent wood laminations and complex formwork needed to build them. My team was hard at work over the weekend and today, producing drawings, print outs, and getting the various parts and pieces ready for the construction of the formwork. Below are images showing the staircase modeled in Rhino, with and without the formwork. Our staircase is designed to have a similar “elliptical” curve as the one we visited last week at the Nathaniel Russell House. Only ours looks a bit more modern for simplicity and ease of construction.
A working …. workspace
The to-scale plan printed out that will guide us through the assembly of the formwork.
Sanding and milling the wood that will become the individual treads.
In other news, I have been busy working on shop drawings and cut lists for the pavilion framing. They are not much to look at yet but here is a screenshot of one of the working CAD drawings. This is process I have come to enjoy doing. The work I had to do on the Butterfly house project last semester has really helped me in this area. Excited to see this pavilion project start to come to life.
Thanks for reading 😀
