To recap, last Friday we held our first design review with some of the stakeholders for the Singleton Park Project where each student presented their individual designs for the park. It was fun seeing everyone’s work and it was very informative to hear feedback from the stakeholders on what worked and what did not. After the review, the students went to the roof of the Cigar Factory to take in the view and enjoy some fresh air while we waited eagerly to hear our assigned teams for the next step.
Some Excellent Scenery!
We also received the news that the Frierson Elementary School project passed a site inspection and is ready for the orange construction fence to be removed. This means that the structure can now be used and enjoyed! There is still some minor work to be done and the plan is to tackle this work over the next two weeks.
On Sunday, we took another trip out to the site to do some of this remaining work. It was a beautiful day to be outside and to enjoy the scenic drive out to Wadmalaw. The students worked on several tasks that included taking down the fencing, trimming some grass, removing all debris and trash from the site, loading up the tool trailer, painting the newly framed interior walls with primer, sweeping the concrete pads, and lastly tightening all the bolts for the steel connection pieces.
During the inspection it was pointed out that the bolts would need tightening as the timber has been given a chance to settle. This tends to loosen the bolts slightly, which is to be expected. For the most part, I found it a particularly enjoyable task to tighten the bolts. I was able to gain a new familiarity with the structure in addition to a better understanding of its assembly. It also gave me the chance to reflect on previous experiences of mine, tightening bolts on cars and boats. I enjoyed this experience and look forward to assisting with some of the still remaining tasks which will include some design and construction of functional elements like shelves, counters, and door handles. The last of which will likely involve some welding!
