Making Norm Proud!

As we’re all working away in the woodshop I see this framed photo of Norm Abram in the office that takes me back to watching This Old House with my mom growing up, learning how to do all the same stuff we’re doing in the woodshop now. Just a good reminder as to why I chose to pursue design-build in the first place.

These past weeks I’ve been a part of fabricating the walls that’ll become the market stalls in our pavilion. The most recent mock-up has been focused on setting up the CNC properly to ‘dado’ out all the slats that hold the walls together. Our first mock-up was all done by hand which takes a level of precision to ensure they all connect together, while the CNC will take out any room for human error and ensure everything is cut perfectly.

Although the CNC is being used for cutting the slats and pre-drilling holes, there’s still a lot of prep work before they can be put on the CNC. Groups of us have been cutting members to length, routing edges, sanding and applying the first coat of paint. There have been a few hiccups with half of our 1×6 members arriving at 5″ instead of 5 1/2″ causing some adjustments to our CNC cut files over fall break, but other than that everything has progressed smoothly with 13 sets of hands all helping to prep the wood.

The most recent update on the walls include a delay of the delivery of the thermally modified wood that will be used as accent boards until sometime next week, so we’ll hopefully start CNCing the painted pressure treated boards until then!
