Final Design Presentation to the Client!

Yesterday, our class had an in-person presentation to the Conservancy of the Sea Islands Board Members and a Zoom meeting for the people who couldn’t attend. It was a very productive meeting; we had many conversations about our design, and great ideas emerged as we discussed it. Kaden and Nolan presented for all 13th of us, and they did such a great job!

One of the many conversations we had was about the materials for the structure, and how using moisture-treated lumber helps prevent rot and extend the lifespan of the Deck for our design.

Attached below is our presentation!

Our design incorporates all of our past small-group designs, which were combined into a single design, and after going through iterations and countless design decisions (for example, having a deck or no deck?). This final design was a great combination of everyone’s ideas.

Here, you can see our design was placed around the original location, with the proposed paths being considered. Our building faces northwest, and we have a shed roof at this angle to help with the evening harsh sun and to drain water to the sides into the rain gardens. In the renders, you can see the atmosphere we are trying to make. The conservancy wants this to be a space for the market and events.

In this perspective section, you can see through the deck and how the rain garden works with the roof slope. On the right, you also see the metal trellis for vines to grow vertically, helping block the morning sun from the east. You can also see the system of shelves on the slatted walls, which serve as displays for art for any artisans who may come in and use the stands. These shelves can be moved around to display whatever the artisan wants. This allows flexibility and uniqueness to each stand.

Shown here is a close-up of the floor plan and how the stands work. After our previous meetings with The Conservancy, they seem to want a more simplified version of the stands mechanism, so we came up with this new system where the walls can be moved to create a big center stage towards the gathering space, which can create 4 stands, 3 stands or 2 big stands, allowing multiple things to happen at the same time. The tracks are attached to the bottom of a 2×6, where the wheels can run. The walls can then be latched to the ground to help with lateral stability.

Finally, here is where you can see more of how the structure works and what we have come up with in the studio to make our design work most efficiently, since it’s on a curve. Here you can also see the prices for everything and the types of materials we are looking at in response to the Conservancy’s request and our ideas.

Tomorrow, I’m sure there will be more updates on how our design moves forward, as we need to make minor detail changes and prepare a new presentation for Tuesday to present to all the board members in person.
