Well, I was supposed to post the Friday before Spring Break, but apparently I was already mentally checked out! So enjoy the photo I took while relaxing at Lake Jocassee up in Clemson…
Before the end of class Friday, we had quickly revised our final design slide show and gave a shot at a practice presentation in front of a guest professor. We passed the updated slides and talking points to Vivian who successfully presented to the Conservancy of the Sea Islands board on the Tuesday during Spring Break, gaining their approval to move forward with the general design. Hooray! But now we have to figure out how to build the darn thing. And, to understate it, building a deck in August is going to be quite warm.
Now on to Kaden…
Spring break threw us both for a loop, so we’re double posting today! I decided to be a little adventurous and traveled down to Merida, Mx (right next to Cancun). Maria & I went to visit some of her family and explore some of the historical sites. Our main priority, however, was getting our hands on some REAL mexican food. She’s from Mexico and I’m from Texas, and man there is a lack of good Mexican food in this lovely state of South Carolina. Can get great oysters on any street corner, but you have to scavenge for some good tacos.
While in Merida, we had the privilege of visiting Chichen Itza as well as several cenotes and haciendas. Chichen Itza is one of the seven wonders of the world! Frankly, it was magnificent, but I also felt let down because the temple looks out of place in the giant field. Kind of like a toy that got set down randomly. Besides that, learning about Maya culture and building techniques was amazing. We learned about the mythology as well as how cenotes were formed/used. Did you know the Merida/Cancun area is where the meteor that killed the dinosaurs landed? I think it’s so cool how advanced the Mayas were in tracking heavenly bodies over such extended periods of time while also constructing monuments to track time.
Here are a couple pics (haven’t got the rest off my camera):

P.S. I have always thought it was funny that everybody attributes the construction of Stone Henge & The Great Pyramids of Giza to aliens because there’s “No way people could build those with the technology back then”, yet no one questions the temples and ancient cities in Mexico/Latin America. We’re all just like “Nah they so built that”.
