Last Day Before The Metanoia Block Party

Tomorrow is the Reynolds Avenue Homecoming event for our Intro to Craft class. The groups have been working hard this week to produce cardboard installations, graphics, and signage for this event.

My group has been working on an installation that draws from the ropemaking traditions of historic Charleston, and the sensory experience of light, to create a design that serves as a cover for farmers market tables. The outcome is a shading device made up of a series of tubes of varying sizes, some closed and some open. We build columns and footers to support this tube system, and are painting it one of the colors from Metanoia’s branding. We will have to build this on site, so the tubes are organized into clusters for transportation. We also created board signs for the event to direct people to where they need to go throughout the day.

Other groups have worked on building chairs, playful sculptures and toys, an interactive wall that will hold sweetgrass flowers, and systems for storytelling and voting on important issues in the community. We are excited to see this event come together, and for our installations to serve in shaping the experience of the people visiting it.

Meanwhile in studio, the group has been working to finalize our digital model, generate construction documents, and create a detailed Gantt chart to prepare for the “build” portion of the semester. We are getting into the most exciting part – beginning to make the elements of the structure. Next week, we will be finishing some of our shop drawings, ordering materials, and continuing in conversation with our structural engineer to finalize construction documents to submit for permitting.
