Design Progression

On Friday, the Design + Build Studio met with Jason Kronsburg (pictured above), the Charleston Director of Parks, in order to show the City three different park pavilion designs that the studio had developed over the past couple weeks.

Leading up to this meeting, the studio had been split up into three groups. Each “small group” was commissioned to design a unique pavilion structure, along with plans, renders, sketches, and a detailed model to present to the City. Every group took a slightly different approach, yielding three unique pavilion concepts that are different in scale and stature and yet cohesive in function and role.

Our conversations on Friday were very beneficial for both the City and the Design + Build Studio. Kronsburg was very pleased with the progress the studio had made, and was excited about the potential of each pavilion. Instead of selecting one of the three pavilion designs to move forward with, he encouraged us to continue pressing ahead with all three concepts until our next meeting in two weeks. Professor David Pastre exhorted the studio to do the same, stressing the importance of developing even greater detail and precision.

Following our next meeting with Jason Kronsburg and the City, the Design + Build Studio is expected to move forward with a final design for the Plymouth Park pavilion and start producing shop drawings and construction documents for that design. Fabrication of the pavilion’s structural components will begin in the shop soon after. Until then, the studio will continue pressing ahead as Kronsburg commissioned us, pushing ourselves to get the most out of these potential pavilion designs as possible!

Professor David Pastre explains the importance of continual concept development.
