DESIGN+BUILD PROJECTS BY CLEMSON COMMUNITY BUILD
It was a busy day for us down in the shop. The day had come. No, not the day we break ground, but the day that we finally received our thermally modified pine for our wall panels. The pallet of materials was dropped off outside in the morning, and we brought it all inside to [...]
The studio had a nice fall break Monday and Tuesday... Wish that could last longer but --> Back to work!! Before we left for fall break last Friday we painted lots of our boards with one of our colors: French Toast. We spent a lot of time deciding the color palette for our walls/structure/trellis. We [...]
We had quite the eventful weekend in the shop. Let's recap! FRIDAY: Our shipment of wood came in, so we brought it inside like ants. We #elevated it onto some excellently laid-out wood boards, thanks to Tyler. One team went straight to cutting and milling the wood, while the rest of us wire-brushed all of [...]
These past few weeks we have had several projects in the works, everyone contributing at some point. I have been helping with the design of the walls from the market stalls, focusing on the connection points and transparency of these walls through physical model making. . The process started in a small 2’x2’ mockup just [...]
After a relaxing spring break, we decided it was time for some studio updates. First, Vivian shared her experience presenting at the board meeting for Conservancy of the Sea Islands last Tuesday. The board unanimously approved both the overall design and the proposed budget, which was exciting news for our team. Though the highlight of [...]
This past Monday, we returned to our brainstorming and iterative process. After debriefing from Friday’s trip to the conservancy where we had discussion and received feedback, we took time to clearly identify both the strengths and weaknesses of each of the four concepts. We made a list of what was working and what wasn’t so [...]
On Thursday we all met up at City Lights Eastside for our weekly book club. We discussed the books let my people go surfing by Yvon Chouinard, and Raising the Bar by Gary Erickson. While we’re split about half and half between the two books, both offer valuable insight into the business world, and [...]
As we continue to work in our small group phase of the Conservancy of the Sea Islands project, things are starting to feel more focused and intentional. My group of three has been refining a few concepts, pushing it beyond just a pass-through structure with expandable/modular stalls to something more meaningful and tailored to the [...]
Mondays are quiet in the studio, as everyone meets with their nonprofits for the Community 1:1 course. There isn’t much to report on that, BUT if you have recommendations for architecture-related things to do in Charleston, please let me know! I’m partnering with the South Carolina Architectural Foundation to create a brochure / informal walking [...]
In the Community Build studio, the beginning of February has been eventful. We are currently moving towards a February 18th deadline as we work to synthesize our many ideas and narrow down our final group design to be proposed to the city. Most of the studio met yesterday to compare sketches and study models, then [...]
