Getting Our Heads in the Game

Good news! The MOU has been completed! We are now chugging along to finish up these last few design options and hope to get materials ordered, shop drawings started, and get into fabrication and on-site work ASAP.

For the group working on the pavilion’s walls, we were able to come together and develop a pattern that creates a balanced density of the wooden panels while also taking code requirements into consideration. The group experimented with the 4-inch sphere rule when determining the spacing between panels, ensuring that the openings are small enough to prevent passersby from accidentally getting their heads caught (thank you to Hamilton for helping verify the measurements). Full wall panel mock-ups are to come later this week!

Pricing is scary!

Final pricing is also nearing completion. This process has involved going back into the model to finalize material quantities from the design changes, contacting different companies to request quotes, comparing the pricing we receive, and determining which options make the most sense for both our budget and overall design goals. This has given us a better understanding of how design decisions translate into actual material costs and how those costs can influence the final design.

As we have continued developing the trellis design, we thought we had reached an agreement to change the trellis’s wire walls to an angled system. The angled walls would provide additional shading while also relieving some of the challenges associated with arranging the top structure. However, we have since been redirected back to the original vertical design with a tunnel-like configuration.

We have also gotten a start on the permitting paperwork and are hoping to submit everything to the city for approval today! Getting the permitting process underway is an exciting step because it brings us one step closer to being able to move from design and planning into construction.
