Our final book discussion of the semester has concluded at Goat. Sheep. Cow. Finishing up the book, Out of Architecture, we discussed potential changes to the education of architecture as well as changes to the profession.
Some ideas we had about education were reducing the number of total years in architecture school, adding more technical classes that teach things like building codes, and having more required internships throughout school. This would allow students to grasp what the profession of architecture is like before they start working in an office. One thing that this book and internships have taught us is that the profession is not like the education. There is a lot more time spent on technical things rather than making cool designs, which is what the majority of architecture school is. Having the understanding of what architects actually do while in school could help to steer students down a career path that they are passionate about. Many architecture school graduates find a job and are unsatisfied because it is nothing like the studio environment in school and having the knowledge about this in school could help them to find what they want to do earlier.
We have finished our books for the semester and are getting ready for final pin ups along with finishing up some steelwork for Steven Washington park. Our discussions have been lots of fun and they will continue next year with the next group of Community 1:1 students! 🙂
