Wrapping up Community 1:1 Projects: Feat. Rain Garden at Mulberry Park

With the studio project in a hold as we wait for comments from our structural engineer, the students worked hard this weekend to finish up their projects for their Non-Profits. Every student has been working with a different non-profit to assist in a semester long project. Today, we will look closely at my (Ethan) project of installing a Rain Garden at Mulberry Park for the Charleston Park Conservancy.

Throughout the semester, I have been helping the CPC with planning, designing, budgeting, and now installing the rain garden. This Rain Garden was originally meant to be incorporated with the pavilion adjacent when it was built three years ago, but now the opportunity to finish this portion of the design has came. The raingarden is next to the pavilion because roof was designed to drip water onto the ground which is the location of the garden.

To begin the install

  1. We dug an outline of the garden
  2. Dug roughly 20 inches into the ground
  3. Poured our sand and composite mixture
  4. Raked the beds smooth
  5. Planted the plantings
  6. Nailed down burlap coverings to secure the surrounding mound in place
  7. Covered the garden with mulch
  8. Lastly, placed pavers and infilled with rocks to create a walking path
