Where to begin?
As we are inches away from starting on site, there are so many things that need to be done before we can start. First off, we need a string plan. What is a string plan you ask? It’s a sheet that David asked for and when someone asked him to look at their progress, he had no idea what we were talking about… KIDDING. It took him a second to remember (lol). However, a string plan sounds silly but it’s probably one of the most important things to start off our build. It basically maps out where our concrete will be and also helps us when we start digging for the foundation pour! So strings will be all over the place, and yes people will trip on them (Mia).
Me and two other students have been working on formwork and shop drawings for the concrete piers (something mentioned in the last post but let me dive a tad deeper) and yes, it’s as boring as it sounds but it’s also super important! These concrete piers will be 2’6″ above ground. Our column and angled bracing for our rafters will be attached to these piers and overall help hold the roof up. In order to create the piers, we need to create a hollowed out version of it (accounting for material thickness), and then we will pour the concrete in this. Not as easy as it sounds because one thing I never even thought of but makes complete sense is that simple screws is not going to hold the formwork together when the concrete is poured in. The concrete is going to want to bulge out on the sides and burst! So, we will have to make wood “belts” around the formwork to hold everything together.

While a small group of us continue to do that, the rest of the studio had the privilege to clean the shop yesterday! May sound like a silly task but it’s always important when taking on a new project to start fresh and clean! I’d probably rather be doing that then using my brain if I’m being honest lol.
