It was all smiles in studio on Friday as the crew geared up for what will be exciting week beginning site work. Studio began with the group gathering to review potential color schemes for painting the pavilion. Everyone has been working hard in their individual groups this week to prepare for finally breaking ground this week. Specifically, the formwork group has been working hard this last week to make a concrete plan (pun intended) for the first steps of site work.
Half of the group is working specifically on the formwork for the concrete piers. The formwork for the piers will be build primarily out of melamine and 2x4s. While the melamine will wrap the entirety of the piers, the 2x4s will wrap around the melamine members like a belt, with some of these members specifically regulating the distance between each pier.
Another portion of the group has been working on finalizing the details of the slab placement and rebar. The main challenge with the slab has been planning for the incorporation of the rubber tiles in the center of the main pavilion. Finalizing these details has been an important step in creating a detailed game plan of the sequence of the foundation and slab being poured.
Establishing the details, such as slab and footing thicknesses, and the rebar system for the slab and its connection to the piers has been important to calculate accurate counts of the rebar and concrete we will need. All the concrete needed has been calculated, so these numbers can now be used to send in the order for concrete from our go-to supplier, Van Smith Concrete. Special thanks to our family connection within the Community Build team, who has set up a generous donation with Van Smith that will help cover some of our concrete costs.
