We Built a Bridge & Got Over It!

As we wrap up this week, I wanted to give a summary of the projects that were completed. We’ve had many things going on in the architecture department at the Clemson Design Center this week.

The Ardmore project is wrapping up on our end as the planter boxes have been built and taken to site and the bridge has been set into place. The city came back to weld the final rods into place yesterday and we will be going back out to site to install the composite decking handrails today.

While on site Wednesday the City of Charleston had workers out clearing trees to continue the work of creating an edible forest of trees and plants. The trees being cleared is also making way for the walking trail that the bridge will be a part of. The walking trail will connect the two Ardmore pavilions with the bike path and will cut around the pond that’s on site.

In ITC (Intro. to Craft) we finished up the cast material project that required us to create objects of brick sized mass to experiment with the combination of colors, textures, and patterns of many different materials. I personally experimented with resin and combined it with rammed earth as well as tried different aggregates of shells, broken glass, and metal shavings from the metal shop.

The wood section of ITC also had a laminated wood project that was shared on Tuesday. They took individual strips of wood and stretched them over a curve and clamped them. They then applied epoxy to each layer to bind each strip together and to keep the shape.

Our new project for ITC is to create either a planter or a vase out of a chosen material while focusing on the formwork. We are to choose a plant or flower that inspires our design and create a mold that we’ll cast into.

The wood section of ITC is working to create a wooden staircase. They are working in teams and are assigned either a spiral stair, curved stair, or straight run of stairs.
