Putting the Community in Community Build

This week called for all hands on deck to prepare for our final design review with our partners and our community outreach event. Like any review week, every minute was precious.

Some students worked on mounting our design boards in the wood shop with spray adhesive right before the review. (It brought on a lot of nostalgia from our days preparing for the PLI event.) Meanwhile, others furiously repaired broken pieces of models past. Frankly, it just wouldn’t be a review week without a few minor disasters. That said, with a little sweat and stress, you will find success. The review and community event went of smoothly and successfully. Greenheart, the Parks Conservancy, City of Charleston, and MSA representatives were all present. The overall feedback was extremely positive in favor of the proposed final design.

Immediately after the review, community members were invited to come out and view the work to offer their own feedback. In high attendance was Moseley Architects, who are right next door in the Charleston Tech Center. They were able to offer feedback on the design from an architect’s perspective, which was greatly appreciated. On top of that Moseley was kind enough to invite students to see their new office and sponsor dinner and drinks. This opportunity to socially engage neighbors of our project was a great way to end the night.

With all this great feedback and engagement from the community, we packed our stuff and headed back to the CAC.C, high on encouragement. We now have some final touches to put on our design before sharing it with a structural engineer. We will also be more heavily communicating with the CUi-ICAR composites team to begin to envision how we will implement composites into the project. Today we will plan for what this timeline looks like over the next three weeks of the semester. Additionally, we will be completing the flower beds and bridge project over at Ardmore and some final furnishings for Frierson. Consider us booked and busy until May 1st!
