Today in Studio a structural engineer, John, came to review our project and give structural advice. As we move into the construction documentation phase of the community build project, all the designs/concepts need to be tested practically and logistically. While our studio had a good idea of how the structure would be constructed, John will ultimately be the one to review the integrity of the project and stamp the drawings for a building permit.
We sat John down along with our physical model, drawings, and diagrams to explain the project quickly. As he got an understanding of the project, we went through the different structural components of the project for him to advise on. We started with the decking structure and columns in the foundation, and ended with talking about the roof structure and trellis system.
We took notes of John’s recommendations for structural sizing and connections that way as we begin to redraw the project we can take all of his points into account. After a couple hours of conversation, the team had a good understanding of where to go next. Next studio session, we will begin to devise a plan to start the construction documents.
