This weekend, the girls and guys split up to tackle both the LVL beams and the rebar for the concrete piers. The girls began by dimensioning the LVLs and marking the screw pattern, a task that took much longer than expected on Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, we focused on screwing the LVLs together, adding the ledger pieces that the rafters will rest on, and starting to paint and prime each piece.
The boys, meanwhile, spent most of their time on-site setting up the rebar and formwork for the concrete piers.
The lesson of the weekend was definitely to measure twice and cut once. Many of the LVL ledgers ended up too long, preventing the columns from fitting properly, and the boys’ 2×4 framing pieces were too short, requiring a trip back to the shop to re-cut materials. Despite these setbacks, everything ultimately worked out, and we’re still on schedule. All in all, it was a very productive weekend!
