This week has been eventful! As Anna discussed, we poured our concrete slab this week. The process was fascinating, and really fun to be part of!
Back in the shop, a group of us finished building the formwork for our concrete piers. After we remove the formwork from the slab, we will install this formwork on site to perform a second concrete pour, so it can set over Thanksgiving break. These piers will hold our columns in the center of our structure, and also support our benches and tables.
Additionally, in my historic preservation class, I had the opportunity to present at a West Ashley Progress in Planning meeting this week. My group has been working on isolating manageable strategies for prioritizing community development and historic preservation in West Ashley. We were able to present this to community members as well as voices in the policy discussions for West Ashley. It was a valuable experience to participate in this conversation and present to the public.
In studio, we will begin work on our beams and columns today. I am excited to start building our beams as they have been my main focus in shop drawings. They are 25-35 feet long LVLs so we will be building these off-site at a location that the city has available for us, then moving them directly to site.
