One Step at a Time

This week in studio is all about working together as a small group to come up with another pavilion design, which will ultimately provide us with another round of critiques before moving forward with a final design for a new park structure at Stephen Washington Park. I’ve been teamed up with Madison and Jake, and we’re working to design a structure that acts as the “epicenter” of the park — meaning the structure would be the main gathering hub of the park, where people would meet and be able to disperse into the park.  We’ve thought a lot about the idea of gradients, and how our structure will define spaces such as gathering, watching, + play.

We’ve gone through many iterations so far, and while we’re still figuring out exactly what our structure will look like, all of the work that we’ve done up to this point has helped us to narrow down what our goals are and pinpoint the specific characteristics that we think will help us to achieve our design goals. The design process has been largely about taking one step at a time — seeing what works, taking a step back, moving forward with an idea, and producing iterations upon iterations. Looking towards next week, this design process is important to struggle through before we present our final small group designs to the city on Tuesday.
