After meeting with city of Charleston representatives, we split ourselves into groups on Friday to divide a handful of tasks amongst ourselves. Some of our classmates studied the history of Steven Washington Park, others studied the community demographics, and others focused on precedent studies. Myself and two others tasked ourselves with measuring everything on the site to create an accurate site plan. Many measurements needed to be gathered to precisely locate the various trees, bollards, and fences that we will have to work around. Not to mention the locations of more permanent fixtures such as the baseball diamond, dugouts and playground equipment. We made sure to use a triangulation technique, gathering distances from any tree to two fixed bollards. We also measured the circumference of the tree trucks. While we were there, we also got a chance to answer some questions from neighborhood parents attending their children’s little league practice.
The measurements taken were used to create an accurate site plan, which was used by the class yesterday to sketch iterations based on site strategy. The efforts and studies provided by the rest of the class allowed us to discuss materials and design aspects that we want to further explore based on precedent images.
