Yesterday marked a huge milestone for our studio. We had the opportunity to meet with a highly respected structural engineer, diving deep into the mechanics of our truss and cross-bracing systems. Since structure is the backbone of our project, this meeting was very important in refining and elevating our design.
We began by reviewing column types, then moved into a detailed discussion about our truss design and webbing—exploring what’s needed, what’s required, and how to optimize it. Finally, we tackled cross-bracing. Through an engaging conversation, we developed a bracing system that not only enhances structural integrity, but also creates a beautifully framed entryway between our columns.
One of the most valuable parts of the meeting was learning about different joint types and their strengths. Since our design incorporates a layered timber system—where pairs of 2x6s sandwich a single piece and span across—we needed to refine our approach, especially where timbers butt against each other. We worked through sizing, joint selection, and the best structural strategies to ensure both durability and design.
Ultimately, this session took our project to the next level, transforming our structural approach into something both technical and visually beautiful. The insights we gained will shape the final outcome in ways we couldn’t have anticipated before.
