As the semester has progressed on through design iterations, presentations, and cd sets, it finally is approaching “go time”. This week is a full send on shop drawings and material counts / orders so we may start fabrication in the wood shop as soon as this weekend or next week. Currently something that I have been working on is mocking up a Rhino-3D version of our concrete pier formwork. These piers are what support our columns and bench/table structures. With this file we can begin to estimate material counts and pull apart the model to lay out cut sheets to export and create shop drawings from! For the main material used to create the “planes” that shape the concrete pour, we are going to use melamine. Melamine is a great material choice for this due to the finish on the face of the sheets. The smooth non porous face doesn’t allow the concrete to attach and get stuck to our formwork during the curing process, therefore creating a clean finish and easier process!
