As many of you know, there is supposed to be a major cold front moving through Charleston within the next 48 hours. One that can bring many people back to the snowfall of January 2018. Approximately six years ago, Charlestonians experienced one of the biggest snowfalls of its history with 5.3 inches of snow which is the third highest amount of snowfall in a 24 hour period in the history of Charleston. With the previous one being 29 years prior in 1989.
While Charleston is a city rich in history, it isn’t a city that is rich in snow preparation. During the snowfall of 2018, Charlestonians felt the effects in many different ways. For example, the runways of Joint Base Charleston were closed by the United States Air Force and the airport itself closed for four days. On a more state level, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety reported responding to more than 900 collisions and assisted in approximately 400 motorists all in the span of 24 hours.
However, things weren’t all bad for Charleston during this storm. Some brave residents decided to make the best out of the situation and have some fun. People could be seen riding inflatables and Christmas trees through the streets of Charleston while attached to their buddy’s lifted truck. Additionally, it created the opportunity for absolutely beautiful photographs of some of the icons around Charleston and how the weather had effected them.
Long story short, prepare for the snow and make sure you’re staying warm and safe. If you think you can drive on ice, you can’t. Just stay home if you can and help those who need it when preparing. Bundle up Charleston, it’s going to be a cold one.
