Today a group of us went to Edith L. Frierson Elementary to install cabinetry and shelving that a group of students designed and fabricated this past week. We spent most of the day on site screwing the pieces together as well as trimming down pieces that didn’t quite fit the as-built dimensions. Most of the shelving, the bench, and the cabinets were put together on site and have been almost completed. We’re now awaiting countertops and the sink and plan to install that early next week.
A small group of us left the site early to join Greenheart during their session at Meeting Street Academy today. It was here that we talked with the students about the community garden pavilion we have designed and will begin building in the fall for their school. We talked about what an architect is and what an architect does. We then answered questions they had about architecture in general as well as for the community garden pavilion that will live right across the street from their school. They were all very curious about how we came to our final design option as well as what the pavilion would look like once it was actually built on site.
One of the activities that we did with the kids was taking a 3D model and inserting it into an app called ARKI which is an AR (augmented reality) software that can be used to show 3D models in real world views. With this app we downloaded our model and took the kids to the site and placed it on there. The kids were able to walk around with the iPads and take themselves through our model in full scale. This helped them to understand what it will be like to occupy the pavilion and gave them a visual understanding of our pavilion.
The last activity we did with the kids was to have them design the rest of park on a site plan. They were able to add any features they wanted to the park. As I walked around a couple of students had decided they wanted to grow cucumbers and strawberries in the garden beds as well as add a trampoline, a pool, and a slipping slide. Below are pictures of the site plan drawings 🙂
