T-Minus 10 (…days until PLI)

It is great to be back at the Clemson Design Center in Charleston!

Coming back after being a part of the Fall 2021 semester, I am excited to be working with the Charleston community again, and our studio cannot wait to get something started for you all.

If you have been keeping up with our blog posts, we have been doing our annual “spring cleaning” of the Community Builds previous sites. Not only are we finishing up the Frierson site and the Ardmore site, but some students have been prepping for a BIG event that is happening at the Cigar Factory in less than two weeks. This event is basically showing the higher-ups (PLI) what Clemson does in Charleston and the impactful things that we have accomplished. But this is not just for Community Build; this is for the entire school incorporating all the programs like Historic Preservation, Urban Design, Landscape, etc.

The previous blog mentioned that we are designing nametags, so I thought I would give a little more detail about what has been going on with that. Nametags…I know…it sounds a little silly, but we want something more than a “Hello, my name is..” We want something we made, something that will stick with them, something that they aren’t going to want to throw away. We want to be remembered, and it starts with the tiny details. Not only that, but we want to make it fun! But first, LET ME TELL YOU, creating a puzzle is much more complicated than it seems, especially if you have David calling the shots… (I kid..sort of, haha). Below are some trial runs on the puzzle nametags.

TEST ONE : We wanted to use a clear material, that way we would spray paint them orange on one side in engrave the names on the other. Unfortunately, it failed as the laser burned the paint.
TEST TWO : Material is switched to 1/8″ MDF board. This worked extremely well and instead of using the laser cutter, we used the new GlowForge.
