Ever since the completion of the first pour which consisted of the smaller slab and the footing for the trellis foundation, we have been preparing for the next pour which consisted of the large slab and the rest of the trellis foundation.
To complete the pour we had to set up formwork for both of the sections. For the larger slab, we used the same method that we used for the small slab with 6-inch metal formwork to create the void for the concrete and a vapor barrier to help prevent water from penetrating the concrete.
For the second pour of the trellis foundation, we custom-made a series of formworks that were propped up on the top of the concrete poured in the formwork set up for the first pour.
In the end, we were able to complete the pour, the process was not without issues. The first of the two main issues that we had was that the pour from the first segment of the trellis pour was not perfectly level, so the formwork for the second pour rocked up and down on the concrete to fix this, the concrete was shaved down to become flat and the melamine on the top of the forms was cut using a circular saw after a chalk line was snapped on the surface to show where they needed to be cut in order to create a level surface for the concrete. The other main issue we encountered was when preparing the formwork, there was a miscalculation and the forms were built at 24-inches tall instead of 16-inches tall. We brought all of the forms back from the site to the shop and chopped them all down to the correct heights.
Once all of that was figured out, the pour began. The process of the pour took roughly 3 hours and we ran into some issues with the consistency of the concrete which led to the end product not being as nice as we had hoped. On Friday we should be back out to the site to take off the formwork and check up on how the concrete has cured.
