More Projects, Less Room

The woodshop was already packed to the brim with wood and steel fabrication for our studio project. On top of the main studio project, we are doing an additional mini project for a North Charleston non-profit (Metanoia) exhibit that features mini structures with various themes. Though our storage space is dwindling, we would not give up any of the valuable work that we are doing for space. Soon enough, all of this hard work will leave its woodshop nest and find their homes in the Charleston area.

We are working with the other studio class that consists of a mix of undergraduate and graduate students. We are taking their lovely designs and making them a reality. The group that I chose to build for along with three other design-build students is the group doing the recording booth. We are making an enclosed, and slightly sound dampened sound booth within a cafe on Reynolds Avenue for the exhibit. It is framed similarly to a wood frame wall and uses plywood to deal with racking forces that the nominal lumber otherwise cannot handle.

We are slightly ahead of the other groups, but do not tell them because they may make us help them when we finish. Anyway, we have all of the nominal lumber bolted together in a way that the walls are easily able to receive the ceiling/roof of the booth and vice versa. We are now in the process of screwing the plywood on ahead of schedule.
