As we settle back into the groove of the semester and studio work, the team has been dialing in material counts and shop drawing details for our project. It’s an exciting time in the studio, with us all figuring out how we are actually going to build our pavilion this fall. Every day for studio, we begin by gathering as a group and making a gameplan for the day. This is critical since we are all working collaboratively to figure out the details. As we move forward, there is ebb and flow of workloads for different components of the project, so some team members are moving between groups as help is needed.

I have been tasked with the trellis design and detailing. As we progress through shop drawings and finalize details, there has been a fair share of continued dialogue on constructability and the building process. For the trellis, there is some concern on the spans of the overhead twisted angles. This week, the goal is to dial in some alternative structural solutions and strategies to make our trellis designs work.

Our trellis design aims to speak to the project’s initial goal: the sweetgrass basket sewers. The side panels will serve as a planting trellis for future planting and are modeled to mimic the sweetgrass that will grow on site.
