The block party finally occurred after weeks of working on our group installations! We all arrived bright and early to the event space tired but ready to go. My group had to put the finishing touches on our design by sticking all the parts together and lifting it to meet its columns while other groups attached their boards to rolling displays and positioned their models around the event.

Each installation was inspired by a traditional Charleston craft and an intended emotion. Some of the other designs included seating and mapping, connecting/stackable shapes for kids, a farmers market installation and shading.

Our group worked on the shading structure. The design was inspired by the rope making tradition in Charleston. We used the cross section of rope to find our form and repeated that shape through a series of extrusions and scaling to cluster into the final design. This deign was then lifted to meet columns in which kids could interact with the shadows cast by the circular shapes creating a fun joyful environment.

Once it hit 11 o’clock, all the installations were in place and the community began to arrive. It was immediately busy with a large energetic crowd. The band was playing music, you could smell food off in the distance and people were very excited to be there. The atmosphere was so much fun and engaging!
