Individual Design Review

Yesterday afternoon we wrapped up our individual design phase by presenting this past week’s work to Jason and Rodney from the city. Each student curated their own board, each with a variety of interests, observations and precedents which contributed to their unique concept. Even though the group as a whole operated with the same shared resources and research, the proposals came out extremely diverse. Unlike our normal, conversational Studio V reviews, this one was conducted in classic architecture school “pinup” fashion; Jason, Rodney, and David gave their thoughts immediately after each presentation. Through this review, we were able to gauge both the City’s preferences as well as the strengths and interests of our classmates.

After we finished presenting, the gang sat down and discussed which concepts we felt had similarities or opportunities for collaboration.  These similarities bridged structure, program, site strategy, and personal skillsets. In the end, we were able to divide into 3 groups (3-3-4) to work towards 3 more developed proposals. Unlike the individuals, these will have more developed concepts, drawings, structure, and cost analysis.

On another note, please enjoy this sketch of a kid holding a balloon from my rendering. He is standing in what I described to Charleston’s Director of Parks as “kinda like a swim up bar but not a bar.” Evidently, I have much to learn about presentation before we give a pitch to the community as small groups in two weeks’ time.
