Class Cross-pollination (Using “Intro to Craft” knowledge in Individual Design Phase)

This week as we begin the “Individual Design” phase, it may be important to utilize some skills and knowledge from one of our other ongoing courses. Currently we are also enrolled in an “Intro to Craft” course, in which we have completed two precedent study assignments. The course and precedent study assignments that we have done can be categorized as being about “psychology + design”.  We have looked into “Affect theory”, Color psychology, “Gestalt Principles”, and how analyzing objects through these lenses may yield architectural application.

To summarize “Affect Theory”, it is essentially our non-cognitive and non-linguistic emotional reaction to the stimuli of our spatial experiences. It’s a study of how our emotions from spatial experiences affect our social and personal behaviors.  “Gestalt Principles” are found in all over the design world, and are about how the human eye and brain cognitively process a “unified whole/shape” in a different manner than the “parts that constitute the whole/shape”.

As we begin to think about our individual design principles, and after gathering notes / feedback from our meeting with the City of Charleston last week, we can begin to think about our user group experience. What emotional experience do we want to curate for the park space and pavilion? How does the structure materiality, color, angles, position, and scale affect this?
