As we all work in teams, preparing the CD set and detailing various parts of the Singleton Pavilion, we’re getting practice in making shop drawings and cut lists in the sister class to studio, Introduction to Craft (ITC). In ITC, half of the class is working on building 1′:1 1/2″ scale model staircases to code.
Looking at inspiration images of spiral and curved staircases, we came up with designs. We detailed the designs to fit the code requirements that we researched, as shown in an example diagram below.
Now, as we move forward with out staircase designs, we’re working to detail shop drawings that will serve as instructions for building complex and precise formwork required to laminate stair stringers and handrails as well as place stair treads and pickets. As this is all to modeled to code, the precision and formwork design required to build the staircases will serve as good practice for designing and putting together the complex concrete formwork in the Singleton Pavilion bases and concrete.
Meanwhile, in addition to the CD detailing work that has been going on for the Singleton Pavilion, there has also been an effort to budget the entire material, hardware and services that would make up the Singleton project. One example of this is the lumber budget and cut list, a snapshot of which is shown below.
