Yesterday was a very productive day on site considering the weather conditions. Alex, Johnny, Jerome, and I got to site by 7 AM and began fixing the purlin locations on the big slab roof. A couple hours in, it began to rain so after some waiting, we decided to grill out our hot dog lunch early under the school to use our time efficiently.
After the rain let up, we continued the purlin fixing and cut more pieces for new purlins. The purlin assembly at the larger hip of the large slab roof is slated to be complete at the beginning of our time on site on Friday. While the roofing team worked in the afternoon, I shifted my efforts to help with the exterior posts of the small slab beltline. This required additional digging, stringing, and leveling to get the post and beam locations to be just right. This will also probably be refined and perfected on Friday. During the off times on site, we also cut all the necessary wood pieces to attach to our metal “feet” of the benches at the trellis part of the structure. These cuts will be refined and the boards will be screwed in hopefully on Friday.
As we left site on Wednesday night and headed our way back to the Cigar Factory, we encountered a crazy fire at a new apartment complex under construction on John’s Island. The flames were high and the embers were flying in the sky above our cars. We luckily got through the scene unscathed without dealing with road closures or heavy traffic. It was a sight to see after a long day on site.
In terms of the storage panels, Kyle, Amanda, and Cory stayed behind in the shop and finished the mid-railings of the panels in preparation for the polycarbonate sheets to be fastened on them. Hopefully we can start bringing these panels to site this weekend and begin installing them to the gables.
Hannah, Shelton, and Cory have been working hard getting our presentation documents, diagrams, and images prepared for our semester review next Friday. I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing the story of this complex project be shown and told.
