Our large group design is narrowing completion as we have our meeting with the city tomorrow afternoon. We have taken strong ideas from the three small groups and narrowed to one final design centered around the driving concept of kites. Kites have a fundamental connection to play, and their function only works in response to nature – in its case wind. Therefore our pavilion is striving to provide a space for gathering that is rooted in both nature and play. As the structural members of a kite are thin pieces with incredible strength, our structure will be strong members angled in ways to achieve a feeling of lightness and liftoff.
These last few days we have been focusing extensively on our structural system, ensuring the pieces and the angles have meaning and cohesion. The community emphasized they want the structure to feel solid, like an investment. Therefore our challenge is to balance a strong, solid structural system, with the lightness and play of the kite parti. After the structure is finalized, we can juxtapose the sharp angles of the triangular roof with softer seating corresponding to the ground plane conditions. I look forward to how our studio comes together to resolve these final details ahead of our review Friday. Getting feedback from the city, the community, and the structural engineer will only make these ideas take flight.
