The Thinking Hand Discussion | ITC Prototype Testing

In field studies, the class met out at Wragg Square to discuss the first 3 chapters of The Thinking Hand, by Juhani Pallasmaa. The conversation focused around how the hand is used in many more ways than we might think. As we discussed the different uses and common understanding of the hand, the conversation transitioned to the benefits and drawbacks of drawing by hand versus drawing on a CAD software. Software has an incredible advantage of time management and efficiencies, but it was the consensus that the visceral connection is lost. The extra time spent hand drawing a building facade produces a deeper understanding of the building elements in comparison to a computer drawing.

In Introduction to craft, students have continued to develop their design for the block party as the deadline approaches. Since we received the material order, students began to construct prototypes of their design to highlight any flaws and further develop the design. Each of the three projects have incredible potential, and we are incredibly excited to present these ideas to Metanoia on Monday when they come into the cigar factory.
