Today we are continuing working through our individual design concepts for the Stephen Washington Park Pavilion. We only have 7 working days to flush out our designs, and 3 studio classes. After yesterday’s studio period, we are all narrowing down on our final scheme and flushing out the details before we work on the deliverables.
Everyone has been designated to either work focusing on the playground or designing an integration with the baseball field. I am in the group that is aiming to foster a connection between the baseball field and the playground. I started by looking at the site, determining where I thought the optimal spot was for the playground and bathroom, then used site circulation and view diagrams to help determine 4 main site locations that work at the park. From there, I came up with 4 different programmatic schemes which would fit in the site context. My design process thrives by doing quick, fast, numerous iterations. So for each of those main 4 partis, I designed 9 variations of each.
After this, I chose my top 3 and started looking at them in section. This combined with a precedent study allowed me to envision how these programmatic elements may start to interact with one another in space. Today I will be working on re-engaging these partis back into the site, with some real scale to determine best site placement and strategy for the design. I think we are all using this individual design time to push our creativity, come up with out of the box solutions that can ultimately be iterated over the next few design phases to reach an optimal result. We are excited to continue working and present these fresh ideas to the city on Tuesday!
