It may have been game time for the Chiefs and the Eagles yesterday, but it is game time for Community Build Studio this week. We have been working last week now as a group of 10, striving to combine all of our former research and design ideas into one final iteration. Some of the major takeaways were the concepts of enclosure, dynamic structural design, and connection to the materiality and aesthetic of the park.

One of the decisions we agreed on is to use cedar shake as the roof material. This ties into the natural look of the playground and the iconic windmill across the street. This material also allows us to be more creative with the roof shape – affording curves and other unique forms.

In class on Friday, we went to the site, Plymouth Park, to gather a better understanding of the tree sizes, their canopies, and the scale of the site. We also noted two major axis present on the site, the view from the parking lot to the structure, and the view from the structure to the playground. After this, we took it back to the studio for some more ideation.

We used these axis as a driving force to inform the form of the pavilion, with the two major programs of parents watching their kids and larger group gatherings (such as birthday parties). With this parti in mind, each student was tasked to come up with their own iterations, using sketches and study models so when we come back to class on Tuesday, we can work towards a final concept!
