Unique Park Deserves a Unique Structure

With the current Studio V project being only a semester long, we have hit the ground running with small group design for our Plymouth Park Pavilion. This park is uniquely situated in Riverland Terrace along the Wappoo Creek. The city Parks department has invested in high quality playground equipment, with natural elements that tie the structure into it’s surrounding environment. The playground sits underneath the trees along the creek, creating a beautiful little haven for families to enjoy some time outside in Charleston.

Having only one week remaining until our design is due, our group made it back out to the site to explore different location options for our pavilion. Every group is working to maximize views of the water, while also maintaining safe sightlines for parents to watch their children play. Our group has been inspired by the Parks Department’s effort to design a playground which fits into the environment; therefore, we hope to provide a pavilion that matches the same design language and aesthetic. Channeling material identities from the wooden playground equipment and cedar shake of the adjacent windmill iconic to the park, we hope to provide a structure that looks like it’s designed and meant to be at Plymouth Park – because it is!

On Sunday we met as a group to merge all of our ideas into one final design. Our hope is to create a pavilion that is functional and modern, but has the whimsical character so present in the remainder of the park. With just a few more design days ahead, we are eager to quickly get into production mode and show off all of our design proposals to the Park’s Department at the end of the week!
