Sketching in the Middle

Last Saturday for our Field Studies class, we had the ability to visit the Middleton Place Inn. The Inn was somewhere I had never been before, and had only seen a few photos and didn’t know much about. But boy did it not disappoint! When I had gotten there, I was blown away by the large concrete structures that first appeared. At first I could not understand where the rooms were, that was until we had walked down the steep steps into the main courtyard. The contrast of heavy concrete and light wood seemed to disappear, as both materials were used in a way to seem heavier together than they were separate. Parts of it almost seemed as if residential structures had been attached to existing commercial smokestacks after a factory had vanished. During the visit, we were able to get into two different rooms: your barebones hotel room and the sweet with a balcony. Throughout my time there, I was able to complete multiple drawings, but may return to complete more as there was just not enough time to draw everything I had wanted. I would highly recommend adding the Inn to your list of visits in the Charleston area if you have not already!
