Introduction to Craft

We’ve just begun our hands-on work in the woodshop as part of our Introduction to Craft class with Matthew Corbitt. This semester, we’ll delve into working with clay and exploring various techniques. So far, we’ve learned how to mix and pour plaster to create molds for our designs. We’re focusing on three key techniques for ceramic production: profile extruding, slip forming, and slab dripping.

For our first project, we’ll form teams to research interlocking systems, architectural precedents, and ceramic fabrication techniques. Then each team will choose one of these ceramic production techniques. Each team will gather images of inspiring products, designs, and artwork to guide our work. Using this research and inspiration, we’ll generate initial concepts and sketches exploring different approaches to interlocking ceramic components, and we’ll develop a project brief that addresses our goals and the parameters of the project.
