Over the past week and a half, students in the Community Build course have been collecting research for the upcoming Build project. Research started with a class site visit to Old Towne Creek County Park. Following this, students were broken up into research categories: researching our partners for the build, history of the site, site analysis, and precedent studies. Gathering this information before starting the initial design phase is important, as it allows us to get a better understanding of where the structure will be placed, who the client is and their needs and wants, and lastly how the structure will be used by those who occupy it.
Now that all of this information has been collected, and shared with our fellow classmates, we can continue with the design phase. For the initial phase, students will work individually over the next two weeks to create their own schematic design, which will be presented to the class next Friday. Site locations were given out randomly, with numerous variations. Two main locations were chosen: inside of the double silt fence (DSF) which puts you more so in a field, or outside of the DSF which places you along a tree line. For more variation, students placed outside of the DSF were broken into two more categories: on edge of trees or inside trees. Students will develop a plan for the type of structure and how they envision the space being occupied. Following next week presentation, students will be broken into groups to further produce a design, but that’s a post for a later date… 😉
