Blame it on the Contractor

I’m kidding, don’t do that. Can you find a mistake in the picture above? To make it easier, can you spot the difference in details on the right and left sides?

While at work today we played a big game of “spot the difference” or “find the mistake.” I learned a lot about the firm’s office building. We took a tour around the exterior of the building and even looked at a few interior details. We nearly made it to the roof but the only person with a key was in a meeting, maybe next time.

The idea to tour the building sparked from a Teams meeting where we looked at section cuts and wall details. We looked specifically at the window/door head, jamb, and sill details of the office building.  Throughout the tour, we learned much more than just head, jamb, and sill details. We learned about drainage planes and weep holes within a brick veneer, brick orientations, manufactured door frames, finishes, and roof structures.

While looking at the exterior wall we were trying to spot the mistakes. One is shown in the image below. The door head was built in at 2” instead of 4″ causing it to cut through a brick horizontally.

Something interesting that I learned about was an electromagnetic door holder and release device. The corridor doors are held open by a magnet and if the fire alarm goes off, the electromagnetic door holder will release the door to close. I also learned how to identify a fire door frame.

Now, going back to the pictures at the beginning. There is a difference; did you spot it? It’s easy to overlook so don’t feel bad. If you look at the images below you’ll see the architects missed it too and it was built the way it was drawn.
