Introduction to Craft

Over the weekend the studio came together to continue the work from last semester as well as make adjustments to our project’s architectural drawings so that we would be able to make a submittal to the Office of School Facilities (OSF) and obtain a permit to begin construction. Our goals for the weekend were to complete a set of redlines made to the project set by local architect Eric Aichele and to begin researching the necessary code requirements which will help us to finish the last set of drawings needed in order to make a final submittal.

Once we reached a stopping point, some of us began to shift focus to a project that we were assigned over the weekend for a course called Introduction to Craft. For the Graduate students participating in Clemson’s Community Build Certificate program, Introduction to Craft is one of the required courses that must be taken in order to complete the program.

During Introduction to Craft, we will be working on a semester long project focused on making kites. The project is divided up into multiple phases which incorporates several side projects designed to help us both understand as well as get experience with some of the techniques that we may have to utilize during the making of our final kite design.

For our first assignment we were asked to construct a kite over the weekend completely from memory. The kite could be made from any material and there were no limitations regarding size, design, or construction. The only thing that we were asked not to do was to research, “how to build a kite” on the internet. Later this afternoon we will be going to Sullivan’s Island to test our designs out on the windy beach.
