Today at the design center, we had our first field sketch day in the city. Throughout the semester, students will be traveling to 3 different Zones to understand the intricacies of the city through sketch. Zone A is primarily the South of Broad neighborhood and the French Quarter. Zone B is the Harleston Village with a few blocks of Radcliffeborough included. The final area, Zone C is the southern portion of the East Side neighborhood.
Students will create a minimum of 87 sketches that are kept in a log that will be submitted at the end of the semester. We are given the choice of 7 drawing types to complete; Perspective, Elevation, Plan, Section, Detail, Site Plan, and Axon. The subjects of the sketch are ranked by Levels 1 through 3. For the 5 subjects given the classification of Level 1, students are asked to create 7 sketches of each. For the 8 subjects given the classification of Level 2, students will create 5 sketches of each. Finally, for the 10 level 3 subjects, students will create 2 sketches of each. These sketches can be any combination of the drawing types listed above.
Today, the class met in front of the Dock Street theater and walked a couple blocks to visit a few buildings that we had the option to sketch. After a briefing, the students dispersed into the neighborhood to find an interesting subject to further understand through iterative sketches. As we are early on in the semester, these sketches are not expected to be our best work, but plenty of lessons were learned to benefit our drawing ability in the future.
