Chief Ken

Happy Wednesday!

Yesterday was our first day back in studio for the week. We met with Chief Ken and he looked over our construction documents and gave us helpful information about our drawings and how they can improve. I am proud of our studio for everyone’s hard work and dedication to the project and not giving up.

Last week, I had a covid scare so I spent two studios at home but worked hard. With lots of help I made calculations for our foundation plan and 16 inch rebar grid for our slab. There were lots of changes, switching the slab from 18in thick to 16 inch thick at the footings, and also making the slab 6 inches instead of 5. All of the hard work was worth it and we are getting really close to submitting for a permit.

It was a hard weekend seeing the devastation back at home in Clemson and Greenville. I travelled to the upstate for the weekend to see my boyfriend and see if there was anything I can do to help his family. Their family just got power yesterday and their basement flooded. I have other friends who have trees through their houses and still no power and water. My heart hurts for them and all of the people across the United States that need help. Back home on Hilton Head, my family is safe as well. I heard that my cat Kia was storm watching and keeping my family safe as the storm came through.

Back when I was a senior in high school, my house actually had to undergo a huge remodel from Hurricane Matthew which is why I decided to get into architecture. This weekend brought back a lot of memories and I hope you all are doing well post-Helene and all of your loved ones as well. It is hard to comprehend all of the damage near us. I never knew it was possible for Greenville to be hit by a hurricane and Charleston to remain mostly undamaged. I am lucky the only real damage was to one of my plants on the porch!

I hope you all are doing well and getting excited to see our pavilion because it will be coming super soon! We are going to learn how to weld soon. I am nervous but I know it will be super cool.
