The other week we presented three group designs to our clients. one of the design featured a fireplace within the structure. Though at first it was received with mixed responses, the clients came to a conclusion that they would like the idea of a fireplace to create a separate gathering area, without having to place any walls. Upon doing further research of the site and receiving info from Matt, who works with the Charleston County Parks, we were able to figure out that the site use to house an oyster roaster. This roaster was an old Kernerator that was used to burn trash in the early 1900s. It was modified to have a steel plate on top in order to roast the oysters and such. The metal components were taken off of any brick structure, so we have more freedom with how we can attach it, but are making it look as historically accurate as possible. We are creating a single brick mass to house the historic oyster roaster and a fireplace side by side. This will give it that “room” feel without having to create any walls.
