Working to Code

There have been just a few times that I have come across something that energizes me and reminds me why I do what I do.  Here is one of those moments:

A few weeks ago my colleague Dan Harding in Clemson sent me an email with a video attachment.  I opened it on my phone and saw it was over 20 minutes long and thought, who’s got time for that?!  This past Thursday I was talking to Dan on the phone and he asked what I thought of the video he sent me and I had to admit I hadn’t seen it yet, and may have lost it along the way as well.  He reiterated it was a must see, sent it to me again, and also mentioned that it was sent to him by the dean of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities, Rick Goodstein.

This time I watched the short film, twice.  The movie below is required viewing for Studio V (there will be a pop quiz on Monday), and highly suggested for anyone else who may read this blog.

“Working to Code” is a movie series designed for members of the Tom Sachs studio team. It is required viewing for all employees and studio visitors.  It may be a bit obsessive, but the basis for “10 Bullets” is true for any well maintained studio, and I believe many comparisons between “The Studio” and “Studio V” can be made.

This also led me to research the guy who created the film, Van Neistat, who happens to be a former employee of the Tom Sachs Studio. Van and his brother Casey are better known for creating eight, half hour episodes  made up of short stories about their lives for HBO called “The Neistat Brothers”.  Their filming style has become addictive  to watch for me.  Tom Sachs and Van Neistat have just finished a new film called “Color” which is the comprehensive color code for the Tom Sachs Studio.  Another must see.

  1. I’m just catching up with your blog. . . This is great. Should be a parent training film! Now I know why my kids and I are proud to carry an OCD degree.
